 III PRESENTATIONS
First Half 2008 Natural Catastrophe Update
On July 8, Munich Re and the Insurance Information Institute hosted an online conference focusing on global natural catastrophe issues through the first half of 2008. The data indicate that the first half of 2008 is the most costly in terms of lives as well as economic and insured losses in many years. Through June 30, natural catastrophes claimed the lives of more than 150,000 people worldwide with overall losses (insured and uninsured) estimated at $50 billion. Steve Morella, Head of Underwriting Services for Munich Re America, made the introduction, followed by these three presentations: U.S. Catastrophe Update, presented by Carle Hedde, Head of Risk Accumulation, Munich Re America; Global Catastrophe Update, by Dr. Peter Hoppe, head of GeoRisk Research and Corporate Climate center, Munich Re; and Economic Implications by Dr. Robert Hartwig, President of the Insurance Information Institute. The presentations include numerous slides providing data on catastrophes from as early as 1980 through the first half of 2008, including earthquakes, tornadoes, and other natural disasters in the United States and around the world.

The three presentations are featured in the report below.
