The Credit Crisis—What Went Wrong?
 |
This report, presented by Robert Hartwig, president of the Insurance Information Institute, at the 35th General Assembly of the Geneva Association, focuses on the credit crisis that has roiled global economies for nearly a full year now. The paper includes a background section and a discussion of the history and origin of the current crisis and its nearly uncontained nature. It presents key questions that need to be addressed by public policymakers and discussions of the failure of risk management in relation to the crisis and the role of regulation. It concludes that the credit crisis has revealed a multitude of weaknesses in risk management, regulation, accounting and policy response and that more time and further analysis will bring to light many additional areas of concern. However, global financial authorities seem determined to work in a concerted manner to reduce the likelihood of such events occurring in the future.
